Today we finished our five senses unit. The children got to take their books home, so I will share those with you first.
The children colored the pictures on the front cover, wrote their names and then glued the cover to a piece of construction paper.
The second page in their books was a cute five senses song I found at this site.
To see what we did for each of the five senses click on the title below each of the following pictures.
The children love to eat popcorn as a snack. However, I hadn’t thought about the fact that popcorn involves all five senses until a reader pointed this fact out to me. We could see the popcorn, we heard it popping, we could smell it, we could touch it, and most importantly we could eat it.

Also, I thought today would be a good day to talk about people who don’t have one or more of their senses.
During our letter units I taught the children the sign language alphabet (one letter per week). Today I read the book The Handmade Alphabet by Laura Rankin to not only remind the children about the letters we learned, but to help them understand that some people can only communicate with sign language. I also taught them the signs for please, thank you, and sorry.
Another activity we did was to do a trust walk. This helped the children understand what it would be like to be blind. I blindfolded each child and then asked them to find something in the classroom. The other children would give them hints as to which direction to go. I think most of the children realized how hard it would be to live without their sense of sight.
We had a great morning, and I think that all of us enjoyed the five senses unit. Have a great weekend!
