I am not sure if anyone noticed, but I haven’t posted any sewing projects for almost 2 months. When I started this blog 2 years ago I mostly posted my sewing projects. Lately, I have been so busy that most of my personal crafting has had to be put aside. However, over the weekend I was able to spend some time sewing a few things for my daughter.
My daughter is growing much too quickly. I have definitely noticed this because as the weather has turned colder we have found that many of her pants don’t fit anymore. So, mom had to get sewing!
The pants and top above were made from some fleece I purchased well over a month ago from our local Joann’s grand opening. My daughter and I noticed that we could get 4 yards of fleece in a blanket kit for $15 which was half price. I still have enough fleece left to make other things for her. I am not sure what yet, though.
The pattern (New Look #6423) I used for the pants was given to us by friends. I decided to make a fleece waistband instead of using a casing and elastic. The top was made from a pattern for pajamas (Simplicity #3935), and I am hoping the set doesn’t look too much like pajamas. I used the brown fleece for the collar and added some at the sleeves even though the pattern didn’t call for it. My daughter thinks they will be warm this fall and winter and plans to wear them in public. So, I figure she must be happy with how they turned out, and that makes me feel good. 🙂
This summer my daughter and I made quite a few skirts. (See posts here, here and here.) She has loved wearing them and isn’t really ready to give them up just because cooler weather is here. So, I made her a pair of leggings using a pattern (Burda #4481) I purchased for 59 cents at a local thrift store. The fabric is a stretchy cotton rib knit that I purchased 2 years ago to make a wrap for wearing my baby. I had gotten it on super clearance at Joann’s for around $1 per yard if I remember correctly.
I again made a couple of modifications to the pattern. I used fold over elastic at the waist to save time. (I just stretched as I sewed with a three zig-zag stitch.) Then I made a faux lettuce edge at the hem of the leggings by using a small zig-zag stitch while pulling slightly on the fabric. They fit my daughter well and she is excited about being able to wear a few of her skirts on colder days.
The skirt she is wearing with the leggings in the picture above was made by cutting off the top of a thrift store halter dress that was too short and using fold over elastic as the waistband. She loved being able to add yet another skirt to her wardrobe.
I am now trying to plan out all of my Christmas projects. I will be trying to make the majority of the gifts we give this year. I will hopefully have many sewing posts over the next few months.
