The last time I posted a garden update was back in August, nearly 2 months ago. I have to say that even though we got quite a bit of produce from our garden, this was not our best year. From what I have heard from several people in our area, that was the norm around here.
We had a long period with high temperatures and no rain. Considering my garden gets no shade, watering didn’t even make a difference. However, I am still thankful for the produce we did harvest and feel blessed that we have the space in our yard to even have a garden.
In mid-September this is what our garden looked like.
That is the day we harvested our sweet potatoes from our other garden spot.
After trying to use our potato fork, my husband resorted to using the tractor. He probably didn’t want me almost stepping on any more of these either.
Note to my brother & sister-in-law: Jeff, you may want to avert your eyes. Emily, hold him. 🙂
Yeah, I have no idea what kind of snake this was, but I’m glad he didn’t crawl up my leg or anything. (Shudder)
We harvested some nice sweet potatoes, but there were only about half as many as we had last year.
A couple of weeks ago we pulled up the tomato plants and called the garden done. We ended up with a bushel of green tomatoes that we let ripen in the windowsill.
Here is what our garden looks like now. My husband surprised me by getting it all tilled and ready for next spring. Now, I have a few months to ponder how to improve upon our garden for next year.
Did your garden do as well as you had hoped this year?
