Felt Composition Book Cover (Tutorial)

December 14, 2011 By Jackie 2 Comments

I have been cranking out the homemade Christmas gifts left and right, and I wanted to share my latest designs. The felt composition book cover and zippered pouch pictured below are one of four sets I made for my oldest children. I will be sharing the tutorials for both in two posts.

Felt Covered Composition Book

I had picked up four composition notebooks during some back to school sales. I know I paid about $1.50 for all four. Why didn’t I buy more? I originally thought I would cover the front and back with scrapbook paper and Mod Podge. Then, I decided that it would actually be easier to sew a cover. Plus, when the notebook has been used up I can replace it easily.

So, I came up with a tutorial for a composition book cover made of felt.

To cover a 9 3/4 inch x 15 inch (total length of opened book) composition book you will need the following.

Supplies

  • Felt (wool, acrylic or a felted wool sweater)
  • Sewing Machine
  • Thread
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Rotary Cutter

Instructions

1. Cut the felt to 10 1/4 inches x 20 1/4 inches.

2. Fold each short edge in 2 1/2 inches and pin in place.

3. Using a blanket stitch, or other overcast stitch, stitch along each long edge of the felt.

This is what your felt should look like when you have sewn both seams. Notice that by folding over the short sides you made pockets to hold the composition book.

4. Slide the front and back covers of the composition book into the pockets.

That’s it. How easy was that?

Here’s what it looks like folded up. This one is for my daughter, but I thought it needed a little embellishment.

So, I cut out two felt circles and sewed some buttons on top.

You could embellish your cover with felt appliqués, buttons, etc. The possibilities are endless. However, I chose not to embellish the book covers for my boys. I honestly don’t think they will care, so I chose to go the easy route. I can always add something later if I feel like it.

I will post a tutorial for the zippered pouch a little later. I need to get supper for everyone first. 🙂

Update: Here is the link the the zippered pouch tutorial.
