Crockpot Apple Butter
Ingredients
  • 16 cups Applesauce
  • 8 Cups Sugar
  • 4 tsp. Cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp. Ground Cloves
Instructions
  1. Follow the instructions found here for making making applesauce.
  2. Combine the applesauce, sugar, cinnamon, and ground cloves together in a crockpot.
  3. Set the crockpot to low and allow the mixture to cook for 10-14 hours, stirring occasionally.
  4. Pour the hot apple butter into hot jars.
  5. Wipe the rims of the jars with a damp paper towel or cloth.
  6. Add a canning lid (that has been simmering in pan of water) and a canning ring to each of the jars.
  7. Process in a boiling water bath canner for 10 minutes (after the water has begun to boil).
  8. Remove the jars from the canner and place on a towel on a counter and allow to cool for 24 hours before moving.
Notes
While my instructions call for canning the apple butter you can also freeze it or serve it right away.

This recipe can be cut in half for a smaller batch. Just remember that you need a 2:1 ratio of applesauce to sugar when making apple butter.

For more information on how to use a water bath canner check out this post on canning tomato sauce for more detailed instructions.
