Crochet Hook Roll (Tutorial)

Nearly four years ago I taught myself to crochet with the crochet hooks I inherited from my Grandma. I had needed a way to store the hooks so I made a holder for them.

I have someone on my Christmas list this year who has taken up crochet as a hobby, and I thought it might be nice to make her a crochet hook roll, too. So, I decided to write up a tutorial to share with you about how I made it.

This roll is smaller than my original one and is designed to hold 13 hooks (C-P, not all of which are pictured) as well as a small pair of scissors and a blunt needle (for weaving in ends). I think this size is nicer than my original version.

If you would like to make a crochet hook roll you will need the following items.

2 pieces of fabric that are 12 1/2 inches x 10 inches (I used a brown corduroy.)
1 piece of fabric that is 10 inches x 10 inches (for pocket) (I used a cotton duck.)
2 pieces of fabric that are 2 inches x 12 inches (for straps)
Scissors
Rotary Cutter
Sewing Machine
Thread
Needle
Ruler
Iron

The picture above shows varying stages of this next step.

The first thing you need to do is take the strap pieces (2″ x 12″) and fold them in half lengthwise, with wrong sides together. Press. Unfold the fabric and then fold one short end towards the inside (about 1/4″). Now, fold the two long raw edges towards the crease in the center and press. Fold in half again along your first pressing line and press again.

To complete the straps, sew along the open edge and the short folded edge using a 1/8″ seam allowance.

Take the 10″ x 10″ piece of fabric and fold it in half, with wrong sides together. Press.

Sew along the fold using a 1/8 inch seam allowance.

Use chalk to mark lines to make the small pockets that hold the hooks. Starting at the right side, make 12 lines that are 1/2 inch apart. Then make 2 lines that are 3/4 of an inch apart. You should have a total of 14 lines.

Now, place the pocket piece on one of the 12 1/2″ x 10″ pieces of fabric and pin it in place, with right sides together.

Stitch along the chalk lines, making sure to backstitch at the top folded edge.

Pin the two strap pieces just above the pocket on the left edge. Stitch over the straps several times fairly close to the edge.

Place the second 12 1/2″ x 10″ piece of fabric on top, with right sides together and pin in place.

Sew around the entire project using a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Be sure to leave at least a 2 inch opening for turning.

Trim the corners and flip the hook roll right side out.

Whip stitch the opening closed using a needle and thread. Press the entire project.

Now you have a handy place to store your crochet hooks. The pocket on the left holds a small pair of scissors, and the tiny pocket on the right stores a blunt tipped needle.

Place hooks in the pockets largest to smallest from left to right.

Fold the top of the roll over the hooks. Roll it up from right to left.

Tie the straps and your hooks won’t fall out. What do you think? Do you know anyone, or yourself, who could use one of these?

As always, if you have any questions about this tutorial please let me know.

    This is so cute!

I’m going to pin this! I need one of these so badly. I had a whole pack of hook that were lost years ago and am in the process of rebuilding my collection. This will be great to keep them organized.

Thanks so much, Pat! I appreciate the pin. That’s a shame about your lost crochet hooks. I hope having a place to store them will be helpful. Let me know if you make one. I would love to hear what you think of my tutorial.

Great little crochet hook roll. Had to click on the title of the post because I really didn’t know what it was referring to. 🙂 Like the colors you chose.

    • Jackie

Thanks, Sara! If you can help me come up with a better title I will change it. 🙂

Great tutorial! Thanks! I made mine tonight and will be making another for a friend. The only changes I would make would be to write out the part where you stitched the top hem of the pocket (or did I miss it?), to sew the ties about halfway up the pocket or halfway down the flap so they wrap around the middle when closed, and to leave the turning opening at the top of the flap. That way, you can just topstitch along the top of the flap rather than whipstitching.
Thanks again! Loving my organized hooks! 🙂

    • Jackie

Thank you so much and I am glad you were able to make a crochet hook roll based on my tutorial. I see that I didn’t state to hem the top pocket. I am not sure how I missed that. I think the ties can be placed wherever you like best. Thanks again.

This looks really nice. I bought my fabric and plan to make it soon. I’m confused, though. I thought the stitched part at the top of the pocket was explained towards the beginning (fold in half, stitch)? Is there a step I’m missing?

        • Jackie

Thanks, Fran! I had forgotten to write that part out, but you are seeing the updated version of this post where I added in the sewing of the pocket thanks to One Stitchy Mama’s reminder. Thanks!

Your crochet hook roll looks awesome! I love the fabrics. I am so glad your friend liked it. What is the pocket on the left side at the bottom? Needle storage?

      • Rachelle

ya or some small scissors or whatever, I just thought it was cute, and I has scrap left 😀 haha. Thanks for such a great pattern, I’d looked at so many, but it was very well written, and I liked the full flap to keep it all secure.

        • Jackie

I think the pocket is cute. I was just curious. I plan to share your Facebook post on my page. Hopefully, that is alright.

          • Rachelle

oh of course 😀 I’m honored

          • Jackie

            Thanks so much, Rachelle!

Love this crochet hook roll… just made one tonight and so happy with it. It was really easy to do. Thank you for a great tutorial

    • Jackie

Thank you so much, Kay. I am glad you were able to follow the tutorial easily. I am always happy when someone is able to make something from one of my tutorials. Enjoy!
