Continuing in our study of the letter “C” and the color yellow we did some car painting. I put some yellow acrylic paint on a paper plate and gave the children some matchbox cars. They had fun driving and painting all over their folders (I will share more about those on Friday.). The cars washed up well and are now back in action on the road. 🙂

Speaking of car washes, I made up this activity for helping the children with one-to-one correspondence. I made a set of car cards and numbered them 1-5. The children were to wash the number of cars specified on the cards. This was a fun counting activity.
To make your own you will need to clean a 1/2 gallon milk or juice container. Cut off the top and bottom, and cover with paper (glue or tape will work). Then use a hole punch to make holes on each end and tied on lengths of yarn. Easy and a great way to recycle something you might otherwise throw away.

After the cars were nice and clean they were used for this free-choice activity center my older two children helped me make over the weekend. They had fun making this for the little ones to play, and the little ones had fun playing with it. I found the idea at Filth Wizardry.

We also traced and colored a letter “Cc” paper from DLTK-Kids. Then we glued cotton balls on the letters. These will go in the children’s’ alphabet binders.

I got out a package of clay and let the children create with it. They found it to be quite different from play dough and had lots of fun using only their hands as tools.

We also read the book The Caterpillar and the Polliwog. This is a cute book about a frog who gets so busy watching a butterfly change that he doesn’t realize he is changing, too. Not only does this book teach the life cycle of a butterfly and frog, but it is a good lesson in self-awareness.
Some other “C” activities we completed today were eating cookies for a snack. We sang “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and added some more verses like “Clap 2 times.” I also set out five clothespins and a large empty peanut butter jar for the children to count how many they could drop into the jar. Overall, we had a fun learning day. Friday I will be wrapping up our study of the letter “C”.
