A few weeks ago I made baked beans from scratch. They were my variation of a couple of recipes. I thought they were good, but I might try eliminating the last step where they are baked without the foil. Two of the kids like a runnier baked bean.
Here is the recipe.
Baked Beans
These baked beans are made from scratch and are really quite simple to make.
Author: Jackie @ Blessings Overflowing
Recipe type: Side Dish
Ingredients
- 1 Pound Navy Beans
- Water (for soaking & cooking beans)
- 1 Tbsp. Vinegar (for soaking beans)
- ½ Tbsp. Salt
- ½ Cup Brown Sugar
- ¼ Cup Molasses
- 1 Tbsp. Mustard
- 2 Cups Tomato Sauce
- ¼ Cup Minced Onion
- 2 Strips of Raw Bacon (Chopped)
- 1 Cup Liquid from Cooking Beans
Instructions
- Rinse beans.
- Place beans in a pan and cover with water and 1 Tbsp. vinegar.
- Soak beans 12-24 hours.
- Drain beans.
- Place beans in a crock pot and cover with water.
- Cook on high 3-4 hours or low 6-8 hours.
- Drain beans but reserve liquid.
- Combine beans with salt, brown sugar, molasses, mustard, tomato sauce, onion, bacon and reserved liquid.
- Place in a 9x13 casserole dish and cover with foil.
- Bake @ 350 degrees for 3 hours.
- If desired, remove foil and cook an additional ½ hour.
Notes
Optionally, the baked beans can be placed back in the crock pot they originally cooked in instead of baking them in an oven.
