B is for Bear

September 16, 2009 By Jackie Leave a Comment

Today we completed more letter “B” activities. We started off by reading the book Corduroy by Don Freeman. It is a cute story about a little toy bear who tries to find his missing button in the department store where he is for sale.

After our story we chanted the rhyme below and acted out the motions. The children liked it so much we did it twice and another time before they went home.

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Turn around.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch the ground.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch your toes.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch your nose.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Arms out wide.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch your side.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Do a clap.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch your lap.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Hop on one.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Your turn is done.

Bear Matching

I made up two different bear center activities that the children really enjoyed. The first was a tactile matching activity. I cut 5 large bears and 5 small bears out of various fabrics (Sherpa, fake fur, felt, and burlap). I then glued them to chipboard (empty cereal boxes would work well.) The children were to match each mommy bear to the baby bear out of the same fabric. It was a good activity for visual discrimination as well tactile learning.

Button Counting

The other activity was good for teaching one to one correspondence. I had laminated bear papers and numbered them 1-5. I set out a bowl of buttons and asked the children to count the correct number of buttons for each bear and place them on the bear’s belly (Love all of those “B” words!). We will definitely do this activity again on Friday because the children need some practice in this area.

Banana Muffins

Banana mini muffins were our snack today. It is fun to try to incorporate our letter of the week into a snack. I used my allergy-free recipe due to my middle son’s allergies. Any banana bread recipe would work though.

Our bubble painting was a success! I will share what we painted in Friday’s post. I also gave each child a small bottle of bubbles thanks to my brother and sister-in-law having extras from their wedding. We blew bubbles outside during our outdoor activity time. We had a fun morning of learning!
