I have made several types of play dough through the years. However, I haven’t tried making apple pie scented play dough. Until today.
I modified my original play dough recipe to make some yummy smelling apple pie play dough. Here is the recipe.
Apple Pie Play Dough
1 Cup Flour
½ Cup Salt
2 tsp. Cream of Tartar
1 tsp. Cinnamon
1/2 tsp. Nutmeg
1/4 tsp. Cardamom
1/4 tsp. Allspice (or Ground Cloves)
1 Cup Water
1 tsp. Vegetable Oil
30+ Drops Red Food Coloring
Additional Cinnamon or Flour
Combine flour, salt, cream of tartar, and spices in a pan. In a separate bowl, combine water, oil and food coloring. Add the liquid mixture to the pan with the dry ingredients. Mix well. Cook over low heat for 3 to 5 minutes. Remove pan from heat when mixture forms a ball and isn’t clinging to the sides of the pan. Take dough from pan and knead on a floured (or cinnamon) surface until it is soft and smooth. Store in an airtight container or zippered bag.
My little guy had a ball making apples and apple pie this morning. I gave him some foam leaves and some small pieces of pipe cleaner to serve as stems.
Other items I had available were a rolling pin, a pie pan, and an apple cookie cutter.
My son got some great fine motor skills practice while using the play dough as he rolled the play dough into balls and as he picked up the small pieces of pipe cleaner and leaves.
All of the items used for this wonderful smelling sensory experience were found in our home. That’s the beauty of working with this age group. They don’t need expensive noisy toys that talk to them. They just need a little of our time and some fun manipulatives. Do you agree?
