My Garden This Week: Our First Harvest

Our First Harvest

After our front garden spot spent much of last week under water, I was thrilled to be able to harvest a few things from our garden this week.

On Monday I shared on Facebook about the two zucchini and two cucumbers we harvested. I ended up frying the zucchini (a special treat) and it was wonderful.

I picked four more zucchini this morning. Just when I thought this year’s garden wasn’t going to amount to much, zucchini came to the rescue. :)

We’ve enjoyed a couple of fresh salads this past week thanks to our garden. Too bad I had to buy the tomatoes.

My Garden This Week (7-11-13)

Garden Update 7-11-13

I am happy to report that our garden is no longer under water. However, we had to pull up all but one tomato plant, all of our cabbage and broccoli, and most of our green beans because they had died from the flooding.

Garden Update 7-11-13 3

We purchased a couple of tomato plants and put them in 5 gallon buckets with holes drilled in the bottom. They were so long and probably root bound from being in a small pot for months, but we are giving it a try.

The first two rows of corn I planted are tassling but I don’t see ears forming. I’m not giving up hope yet, though. They do look distressed at the bottom because they sat in water for several days.

Garden Update 7-11-13 2

My back garden spot is doing pretty well and that is where my zucchini and cucumbers are.

Garden Update 7-11-13 5

The potato towers are still growing and have started flowering.

It looks like we may get quite a few more zucchini this year and I am so happy about that.

How is your garden growing this week?

I have zucchini envy…I think you have done fairly well considering.

I usually end up with too much zucchini, but I doubt that will be the case this year. If I could I would send some your way. :) And yes, I do think the garden is doing pretty well all things considered.

Looking good Jackie :-) It has been raining mostly all last week but that’s okay because it is Winter. Just as well my husband and I love zucchinis because we usually have an abundant crop. Have you ever tried making zucchini pickle? Lovely on a sandwich or heated up over meat instead of gravy.

Thanks, Merryl! I sometimes forget some of my readers are experiencing winter right now. :)

I have never tried making zucchini pickles but they sound delicious.

How fun on getting Zucchini and cucumbers! My zucchini didn’t come up this year which was a bit disappointing but quite likely somebody will be willing to share with me as they are usually pretty abundant. My cucumbers have a long way to go before picking (they have been a bit slow) but we have also been picking and eating a lot of salads. With our indoor tomato plants we have even had our own tomatoes a lot. I think we will be getting tomatoes from the garden soon as well.
I am so sorry about the loss of your tomato plants and the other garden difficulties!!
Your corn looks so tall. We always push to get knee high by the 4th of July. We only barely made it this year and that wasn’t all the plants nor up to everybody’s knees. Oh well, In the end it usually works out. :-)

That’s a shame about your zucchini. I have been thankful for the fact that at least some of our plants survived and are even producing. I hope you have a bountiful harvest. :)
