When Life Gives You Lemons…

Every day we have a choice to make about how we will handle what life throws our way. Will we look for the blessings or will we focus on the negatives?

This morning life tried to give me lemons and you know what I chose to do with them? No, I didn’t throw them back or squeeze them in someone’s eyes. I added some sugar and water and made lemonade, that’s what. ;)

You see, I was taking my children to school this morning when I heard a strange sound. I quickly realized what was making that sound, a flat tire.

I pulled off the road and turned on my flashers. My husband was still at home getting ready to head to a conference so I gave him a call and asked him to quickly pick up the kids and take them on to school. Then, I called my parents and my dad offered to help change the tire.

It took both my husband and my dad to get the spare tire off of the bottom of my truck. First they couldn’t get it off and then the jack my dad brought quit working. This required a trip back to our house to get another jack.

Finally, they were able to get the spare tire on my truck. I had been on the highway, in my pajamas, with my hair in disarray, and without clean teeth for approximately an hour and 15 minutes.

My husband wanted me to get four new tires put on our truck so I quickly got dressed and headed to town. Almost 5 hours after leaving the first time, I was back home.

Now, I could have chosen to let the flat tire fiasco of 2012 ruin my day and let it fill me with negative thoughts. However, I chose to follow the Bible verse I posted on my Facebook page this morning.

So, with these Bible verses in mind, I want to share with you all of the ways God blessed my family in this situation.

  • My husband was home because he was going to a conference. Normally, he would have been gone to work. However, this morning he was able to quickly get the kids from me, take them to school so they weren’t tardy, help my father change my tire, and help me talk to the tire people about getting new tires all before he headed to his conference.
  • My father was home still and was able to come to our aid and help my husband change the tire.
  • My kids weren’t late to school.
  • Two high school boys, who are also on my brother’s cross country team, turned their vehicles around to come back and find out if I needed help.
  • The weather was beautiful instead of cold and rainy like earlier in the week. This meant that my husband and dad didn’t get wet while changing the tire.
  • I was only 5 minutes from home with help nearby instead of far away or on a busy road.
  • We had the funds to not only get a new tire to replace the flat/unrepairable tire, but we were able to get 4 new tires. In previous, leaner times I would have been panicked wondering how we would pay for just one new tire.
  • No one seemed to notice that I was still in my pajamas and my hair wasn’t fixed. :) Well, this really isn’t a blessing, but it has taught me to make sure I am ready for anything before leaving my home.

Yes, God truly blessed me today, just as he does every day. Those lemons tried to make my attitude sour, but God was able to instead let me see His sweet blessings and give Him thanks.

Have you had a situation recently where you were able to turn lemons into lemonade?

Great verse, Jackie. This is the first verse our homeschool memorized this fall. Truly, anyone could understand just how busy you are. Besides, I’m sure you weren’t a shock to anyone’s eyes. I have seen many people shopping in pjs.

Thanks, Rachel! That is great that your family memorized the verse.

Yes, I am busy, but still… The one day I actually was in my pj’s is the day that I have a flat tire. Lesson learned. Thankfully, the highway I was on isn’t too busy. :)

I have had many of these days lately; a flat tire ($$$), a vehicle that was hopefully fixed right yesterday after several trips to the shop in the last few months ($$$), a flooded finished basement from a sewer pipe($$$) and finally a disgruntled employee that has taken it to a personal level(:(((). As you stated, each and every time things just worked out and God provided the people and funds to take care of the situation. I was just beginning to think things were getting back on track when all these things hit me in the last 10 days. It is amazing how my life and attitude have changed. I was upset yesterday but when I woke up this morning I realized I still was able to pay all the bills, I still have a great job, friends, and family dispite someone trying to sabotage it all. Above all, I have God to help me through all of it. Yesterday, mom ordered me to get myself together and today a good christian friend of mine said two words to me, “GET UP!” I am up and getting it together. God is good all the time and he will provide! There is no way I could have gone through this week a few months ago but today I am able to see the good and be strong. Thanks so much for your post. It’s nice to know that everyone goes through trials and your post was another way of helping me see the good in mine :)

Thank you so much for sharing your struggles and hope, Stacey. I truly appreciate hearing what you are going through and how God is using these situations to draw you closer to him. I will be praying that you continue to have the strength to rise above all of the trials and to be strong in Christ. Take care.
