How to Cut Cinnamon Roll Dough (& Recipe)

What do cinnamon rolls and dental floss have to do with each other? Watch this short video clip to find out.

Like I showed in the video, cutting cinnamon rolls with dental floss is easy. Using a knife can squish the rolls, but using dental floss (or cotton string/yarn) doesn’t. Just be sure not to use mint flavored dental floss, unless you want your cinnamon rolls to be minty fresh. :)

Here’s my cinnamon roll recipe. I have made them with regular flour, but have now been making them with whole wheat flour.

Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups Very Warm Water
  • 1 Tbsp. Yeast
  • 1 Tbsp. Sugar
  • 3 Tbsp. Olive Oil
  • 4 ½ - 5 Cups Flour
  • 1 tsp. Salt
  • Melted Butter
  • Brown Sugar
  • Cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix water, yeast, sugar and olive oil and let stand until bubbles form on top.
  2. Mix flour, salt and wet ingredients together.
  3. Knead the dough.
  4. Let rise until doubled.
  5. Roll out the dough until it is about 1/4" thick.
  6. Brush the dough with melted butter.
  7. Sprinkle brown sugar and cinnamon over the melted butter.
  8. Roll the dough, from the outside in, into a log shape.
  9. Use clean string or plain dental floss to cut the dough into rolls.
  10. Place the cinnamon rolls into pans.
  11. Bake in a 350 degree oven until rolls are golden brown. (20-30 minutes)

Notes

*Easy icing: Add a teaspoon of milk or water to 1/2 cup of powdered sugar. Stir. Add more liquid until you have a pourable icing.

You can use whole wheat flour in place of all purpose flour. If you do, add 1 Tablespoon of white or apple cider vinegar to the dough.

I use my KitchenAid mixer to knead the dough. When it has formed a ball in the mixer I know the dough is just about ready to let it rise.

I don't measure the amount of butter, cinnamon, and brown sugar that I use. You might need 1/2 cup of melted butter and however much brown sugar and cinnamon as it takes to cover the dough.

You can always divide the dough in half if rolling out that much dough is a problem. You can even use the dough to make pizza crusts.
