How to Freeze Milk

Until we are able to procure and/or afford raw milk, we have to get ours from the store. Sometimes we find a good deal on milk and want to stock up. However, I often can’t use all of the milk before the expiration date. I definitely don’t want it to go to waste, so I freeze the milk.

To freeze a gallon of milk you must first pour out (Use it, not dump it down the drain.) about 1 cup of the milk so that the jug doesn’t bust when it is frozen. Then simply put it into your freezer.

When you are ready to use the milk, thaw it out in the refrigerator or in a big bowl of cold water. Make sure you shake the milk really well before using. The de-thawed milk works best for cooking, but it can also be used for drinking.

Have you ever frozen milk?

*Update: According to a couple of commenters, they have frozen milk without taking any milk out. Apparently, that may be an unnecessary step. Another idea was to put the frozen jug of milk in the sink to thaw overnight. Just thought you might like to know that what I do isn’t the only way. :)

I recently bought about 24 gallons of organic milk at half-price and froze them. I didn’t pour off any of the milk but just froze the unopened jugs — no problems with them bursting. Also, to thaw it I just put a jug in the sink overnight and it’s mostly thawed by morning.

That’s great, Lynn! I have updated the post to state that pouring out some of the milk isn’t something that is necessary. Thanks for the info. :)

Never! If we have excess milk, usually its made into pudding, which never goes to waste around here.

The idea of frozen milk freaks me out a little, even though I love ice cream.

I used to freeze milk, but never opened it just put the entire jug in freezer, then when needed put it in the fridge and we would shake before drinking. Now we drink almond milk, have never frozen that though.

Thanks for sharing what worked for you. I have updated my post to state that pouring out some of the milk isn’t necessary. I use almond milk for my son with the dairy allergy.
