Baked Beans Recipe

A few weeks ago I made baked beans from scratch. They were my variation of a couple of recipes. I thought they were good, but I might try eliminating the last step where they are baked without the foil. Two of the kids like a runnier baked bean.

Here is the recipe.

Baked Beans
Recipe Type: Side Dish

These baked beans are made from scratch and are really quite simple to make.
Ingredients
  • 1 Pound Navy Beans
  • Water (for soaking & cooking beans)
  • 1 Tbsp. Vinegar (for soaking beans)
  • 1/2 Tbsp. Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1/4 Cup Molasses
  • 1 Tbsp. Mustard
  • 2 Cups Tomato Sauce
  • 1/4 Cup Minced Onion
  • 2 Strips of Raw Bacon (Chopped)
  • 1 Cup Liquid from Cooking Beans
Instructions
  1. Rinse beans.
  2. Place beans in a pan and cover with water and 1 Tbsp. vinegar.
  3. Soak beans 12-24 hours.
  4. Drain beans.
  5. Place beans in a crock pot and cover with water.
  6. Cook on high 3-4 hours or low 6-8 hours.
  7. Drain beans but reserve liquid.
  8. Combine beans with salt, brown sugar, molasses, mustard, tomato sauce, onion, bacon and reserved liquid.
  9. Place in a 9×13 casserole dish and cover with foil.
  10. Bake @ 350 degrees for 3 hours.
  11. If desired, remove foil and cook an additional 1/2 hour.
Notes

Optionally, the baked beans can be placed back in the crock pot they originally cooked in instead of baking them in an oven.

Hi Jackie…If you were to put your beans back in the crockpot and not into the oven about what temp and approximately how long would you then cook them? Thanks! Melody

I guess you could do them on low all day or on high for a few hours and see how they turn out. I guess I need to experiment with this.
