The Garden Has Seen Better Days

I haven’t posted a garden update for a few weeks because, quite frankly, my garden has looked pretty embarrassing.

Here is what my garden looked like two weeks ago.

The weeds have taken over and it even looked worse than that before my mom came over this afternoon to help me. I took a sickle to the weeds and so did my mom. She pulled the green bean plants that were dying as well. Here is what the garden looks like now.

Perfect? Far from it. More manageable? Yes! I might actually be able to find the tomatoes. Speaking of tomatoes…

We have tomatoes!!! Bring on the salsa and spaghetti sauce!

We picked another row of corn about two weeks ago. We ate lots of it and then I froze the rest off the cob. My last row of corn doesn’t look like it will amount to anything, but at least we have enjoyed some sweet corn.

The blackberries were loaded this year. I made a couple of batches of jam, and I froze some of the (unsweetened) juice in ice cube trays to use in smoothies.

We have also harvested two pumpkins. These came from a plant that I almost pulled up a few months ago because the stem was broken. Who would have thought?

We have been blessed with lots of wonderful produce in spite of the sad state of my garden and for that I am very thankful.

I do have a question for those of you who grow regular potatoes. How do you know when they are ready to harvest? I think mine might be close, if not ready.

Does your garden look as sad as mine, or are you much better about taming those pesky weeds than I am?

I’m pretty sure my mom let the plants die first. Then, they dug them all up.

A lot of people think potatoes are roots, but they are special stems. This is why you add dirt every now and then around the stem. As the plant grows, the stem gets taller leaving more room for potatoes to grow. They will be encouraged to grow as more dirt covers the stem. I was reading that your hill will be about a foot deep by the time the plant dies.

Anyway, good luck with the potatoes. And as for the rest of your garden, it still looks good. You still have growth in there.

Thank you for all of the helpful potato information, Rachel. I think they must be getting close to being ready.

My garden looks terrible. Not sure why but nothing has grown except we have gotten 1 large and about 5 grape tomatos.
The pepper, eggplant, zucchini, and herb plants all died. I need help to have a better garden next year.

I am sorry about your garden, Becky. That stinks. I wonder if there is an imbalance in your soil or maybe you have had a lack or rain. ? I hope you have a better harvest next year.
