Natural Cleaning Ideas

It has been a few years since I last wrote a post about natural cleaning.  A good friend sent me an email that prompted me to revisit the topic.  Here is what she wrote.

“OK, so I made myself a batch of homemade laundry soap on Friday and I am quite impressed. I am also switching to vinegar for fabric softner. I have to say I miss the smell of the store bought so do you have any suggestions about that? Also I read your dishwasher detergent recipe and where do I buy liquid castile soap and the tea tree oil?”

Here was my response: “Yay! Did you make the liquid recipe of laundry soap? I am glad it is working for you. As far as the smell I think it will just take some time to get used to. I haven’t used anything scented in my laundry for so long that I can’t stand it when I get something someone has washed with scented detergent.  :)  You can add some essential oil to the liquid, but I probably wouldn’t. However, you can take a sponge or washcloth and dip it in a half water half fabric softener solution. Wring it out and then put it in the dryer with your clothes. It will make a bottle of softener last a long time which is very frugal. Just a thought.”

Often these items can be purchased locally at health food stores or even at Kroger’s.  I usually like to purchase things from Amazon using my Amazon Mom free prime shipping.  Dr. Bronner’s is a good brand of castile soap.  Tea tree oil is an essential oil I like to keep on hand.

I just made homemade laundry detergent for the first time last month (we've been using vinegar as softener for months now) and we LOVE it. I will never go back. I did a powdered version, not the liquid, and I'm totally with you on the scent. Things smell clean but when I get something washed in detergent now it almost automatically makes me sneeze.
