Good morning! It is time for Fix It Up Friday again. I am so glad to have you join me. Thank you to all of you who linked up last week. If you didn’t get to check out all of the cool ideas that were shared click here. Today I am sharing another sewing tutorial.
My daughter was in need of some shorts so we went to Walmart. She didn’t like any of the choices because she thought most of them were too short.
We ended up deciding that we would make some shorts out of two pairs of her pants that were going to be too short by the time colder weather hits. Here are the steps I took.
First, I used a pair of shorts that fit my daughter and laid them on top of the pairs of pants. I added two inches to the length because my daughter wanted them to be a little longer. Then I cut off the excess.
You don’t have to use a pair of shorts as a guide. You can simply decide how long you want your shorts to be and then factor in how much of a hem you will make. (I would add no less than 1 inch for the hem.)
Then I turned the pants/shorts wrong side out.
I wanted a 1/2 inch hem so I folded the bottom of the pants under 1 inch.
I then pressed the hem. Next, I folded the hem under again so that the raw edge was tucked under and touched the original 1 inch pressing line. Then I pressed the hem again.
If this is too confusing here is another way to make a 1/2 inch (or any size) hem. Fold the raw edge under 1/2 inch and press in place. Fold the hem under another 1/2 inch and press.
You can pin the hem in place if desired. I usually pin the fabric so it doesn’t come unfolded when I am sewing.
As you can see the raw edge of my hem is tucked inside so that you won’t see it.
Finally, I stitched close to the open edge on each hem. (Remember this is a pair of shorts so you will have to do these steps for both legs.)
That’s all there was to it. Now my daughter has two pairs of shorts that are a length she likes.
Now, it is your turn to link up your creative posts. I look forward to seeing all of your great ideas. The guidelines for linking up are here.
