Super Simple Scarf Crochet Pattern

I made this scarf for my daughter for Christmas and thought I would share the pattern.  It was made with a bulky weight yarn and I only used a double crochet stitch.  I ended up taking the fringe off of the scarf after my daughter wore it for awhile because the type of yarn I was using frayed badly.  The scarf above was made with Lion Brand Homespun yarn.

This was the first scarf I made for my daughter (I am using it.), but I didn’t like how the yarn ended up making big blocks of color.  When Julia picked out the yarn it didn’t look bad, but once I started crocheting with it I didn’t think it looked as nice.  The yarn was purchased at Joann Fabrics and is called Lodge by Sensations.

I am definitely no expert at crocheting or crochet pattern writing.  However, I wanted to have a record of how I made these scarves and thought by posting the pattern here someone else may want to give one a try.

Super Simple Scarf

A Crochet Pattern by Jackie of Blessings Overflowing.
Materials to make a 4 inch by 5 foot (or desired length) scarf:
J hook
Bulky (5) Weight Yarn
Blunt tip tapestry needle to weave in ends.
DC=Double Crochet
Chain 12
Row 1:  DC in 3rd chain from hook (counts as 1st DC).  DC in each remaining chain.    (12 DC)
Row 2:  Chain 3 (counts as 1st DC) and turn.  DC in next DC and in each remaining DC from row 1.  (12 DC)
Row 3 to desired scarf length:  Chain 3 (counts as 1st DC) and turn.  DC in next DC and in each remaining DC from the previous row.  (12 DC)
To Finish Scarf:   Once the scarf has reached the desired length, finish off. Weave in ends.
Fringe:  To make the fringe you will need three 12 inch lengths of yarn for each set of fringe. There are 5 sets on each side of the scarves pictured which would require thirty pieces of yarn.
Take 3 pieces of yarn and pull the centers through a stitch on the short end of the scarf.  Loop the yarn through itself so that there is a single knot attaching the fringe to the scarf.  Repeat, evenly spacing the fringe on each end, until you have 5 sets of fringe per end.
Let me know if you have any questions or if something about the pattern doesn’t make sense.

The Super Simple Scarf pattern is cute, but chaining 3 at the end of each row is incorrect. I am using the same yarn you used and chaining 3 leaves a large hole at the end of each row and causes the scarf to be uneven. I made my scarf by chaining only 1 at the end of each row and this creates an even, nice looking scarf. Thanks.

I’m sorry you had a problem. Chaining three has not been a problem for me and I have made several scarves this way. Maybe making a turning chain and then doing a double crochet in the same stitch is a better method. Thanks for your helpful suggestion. I have never claimed to be a proficient pattern writer. I just like to keep a record here of patterns that have worked for me so that I don’t forget what I have done. Take care.
