I was able to do a little sewing over the weekend and made some fleece hats and slippers for my children for Christmas. I had all of the materials in my stash which meant I didn’t have to purchase any new supplies. Yay, for using things I already have!
The burgundy hat was made using a tutorial I found here. The Colts hat on the bottom left was made using the same pattern, but with a different sized band. I made the band 9 inches by 22 inches. I think this made it look a little more boyish.
The hats on the right were made using the fleece hat instructions on Martha Stewart’s site. For the hat on the top left I cut a piece of fleece at 20 1/2 inches by 10 inches. I only turned the fleece up 2 inches instead of her recommended 3 inches. I basically followed her instructions for the solid color hat. I did use more than one stitch to keep the points in place on top of the hat, though.
For the hat on the bottom right I cut a 20 1/2 inch by 9 inch piece of fleece. I followed the same instructions but only folded the bottom up 1 inch. Then I used a small strip of fleece to tie knots in each corner of the hat.
I also made slippers for the kids using this free pattern for polar fleece socks. I followed the instructions as written. To figure out which size to make for each child I used the pattern pieces for the slipper that was just a little bigger than their foot. The nice part about these slippers is the Jiffy Grip on the bottom to make them not be slippery.
The hats and slippers were easy and fast to make. Plus, they will keep my children warm this winter.
