Baking Soda in the Dishwasher

Almost two weeks ago I ran out of dishwasher detergent. So, I grabbed my baking soda, filled the pre-wash compartment, and hoped for the best. I was pleasantly surprised with the results, and have been using baking soda ever since.

I think the key is to only use baking soda in the pre-wash compartment because I am pretty sure it would leave too much residue if it was in both compartments. I also use white distilled vinegar in the rinse aid compartment which works well.

Until I come up with a good homemade dishwasher detergent that doesn’t use borax, baking soda is what’s working for me.

Perhaps you could substititue baking soda for borax in the homemade recipes?

I posted about using vinegar in the d/w this week too!

I have been wanting to try vinegar in the rinse cup. I'm glad to mentioned that it works for you!

I tried vinegar in the dishwasher once and everything came out smelling like vinegar. It made the water and food taste nasty, so I had to rerun the cycle a few more times before the vinegar was off everything.

    Thanks for your comments, ladies.

Jenny, I am sorry that you had that happen with vinegar. I have been using it for years in the rinse-aid compartment and never had a problem. I use vinegar in most of my homemade cleaners with no issue.

I *heart* you. Used baking soda today with great effectiveness. I actually use vinegar in a cup that I put in the top rack. I keep scoring free rinse stuff so I'm still using it.
