11 Weeks to a More Organized Life & Home: Week 2 (Dress for Success)

October 23, 2011 By Jackie 6 Comments

Last week I began reading the Bible for 15 minutes each day as I started trying to get my life and home organized before the new year. This week’s goal has to do with clothing.

Now, I am no fashionista. Quite frankly I don’t enjoy shopping for clothes. I think it stems from when I was a teenager and fashionable clothes for 6’1″ girls didn’t seem to exist.

Too many days I can be found looking like this.

My mom snapped this picture of a sweet moment when I was reading to Joseph while nursing Janna. It is a sweet picture, but look at me for a second.

Do you see the dried paint on my pants? I wasn’t even painting anything that day. My hair wasn’t fixed other than to throw it up in a bun. Plus, I don’t even have an upper undergarment on (If you know what I mean. I’m trying not embarrass my dad or brother here.).

This is my attire more often than not. If I need to go somewhere I have to change clothes and fix my hair first. I have been thinking a lot about this habit.

If I had a job outside of the home I would have to get up, get dressed in appropriate clothing and fix my hair. However, because I am home most days I somehow must think I am exempt from doing this.

Just because I don’t get paid doesn’t mean my job is any less important than if I worked outside the home. I used to be a teacher so I do know what working outside of the home is like. You have to look presentable and dress appropriately in the workplace.

I have decided that I need to take my job as full-time mom just as seriously. I need to dress for success even when I am only going to be seen by my husband and children. They deserve to see my at my best.

Now, this doesn’t mean that I am going to start buying all new clothes, wear lots of make-up and spend a lot of time on my hair each morning. I want to look nice, but not spend a lot of time or money doing so.

One of my plans this week is to go through my clothes and make some decisions about what I actually will wear. The other thing I plan to do is to wear jeans, a nice shirt (with appropriate undergarments) and fix my hair each day.

My job as a mom is important enough to take the time to look nice.

I have created a checklist for this week so that I can keep myself accountable as I continue to read the Bible and start dressing for success. You can print one by clicking the picture below.

Those of you who do not work outside of the home, do you ever find yourself looking like me? Is this something you would like to change? Let’s encourage each other to dress nicely each day.

Join me on Facebook each day where I will post each day when I have completed my goals.

okay, I would like to look a little more “girly”. I am often in jeans and tshirt or sweats if I’m staying in. I have some nice girly clothes but I don’t feel like I should wear them when I’m going to be down on the floor playing

I know what you mean, Amber. I used to wear a lot of dresses and skirts when I was teaching, but only do for church now. I guess for me to wear a skirt around the house it would need to be full and flowy. Maybe we have some ladies who wear skirts all the time for religious reasons that might chime in on this issue. Jeans and nice shirts will be a step up for me so I am going to start there.

Yea! Clothes was what I was wanting to work on this week too and I am glad that is your focus too! I need to go through all of our clothes but I love the idea of working on making ourselves look nice. I am not a make-up wearer for any occasion and I won’t be changing that and I am fairly satisified with how I dress but I think it would be fun to work on that a little more and I do need to go through my clothes, clean and polish my shoes and do some mending but most of all for my personal appearance I want to work on my hair. So often I just comb it and that’s all and then it looks pretty bushy. I am not sure what I will do but I think that will be something I try to work on this week as well.

Great minds think alike. 🙂 I know what you mean about hair. I recently got a hair cut and I feel so much better. It had been over 6 months since I my last haircut. My hair is naturally curly/thick/bushy/unruly, so I understand what you mean.

I can totally relate and I wanted to encourage you.
Dressing comfortable is a must as a stay at home mom and yet I learned its essential to save the “best me” for my husband. One day I noticed he commented how great I looked. I had put myself together for a birthday dinner with some friends. I said thank you of course, but it occurred to me I that he noticed and liked it. That day changed my thought process.
If my husband is my best friend and love for life, then I would put myself together for him each day. Since I homeschool I cannot say this is every day, however I do make a conscious effort to do my hair and makeup each day, for him.
If I do not have opportunity in the morning then I stop everything about a half hour before he’s due home and do my hair, makeup and check my clothes.

It’s a daily investment in me, with the intention to bless him.
My 6 year old loves it. He makes sure I put on jewelry too:).

That is wonderful, Bekki! I think that fixing yourself up for your husband is a great thing to do for your marriage. I am hoping my husband enjoys me looking nicer, too. I sometimes get so caught up in taking care of the house and kids that I don’t take care of myself. That in turn isn’t taking care of my husband. Thanks for your insight.
