Winter Sensory Bin

January 21, 2010 By Jackie 2 Comments

I have seen some really cool winter sensory boxes on a couple of different blogs. Pink & Green Mama, Chasing Cheerios, and No Time For Flashcards all have great ideas. However, I had been putting off setting one up because I didn’t have the “right” items.

I decided yesterday that I wanted to figure out what I could do with things in the house. I started with a shallow plastic tote box and filled it with a bag of cotton balls ($1-$2) to serve as snowballs.

Then I added an ice cream scoop and an empty icing container so that my sons could pretend they were making ice cream for each other.

Lastly, I added a pair of tongs and an empty toilet paper tube which my son used to transfer snowballs from the box to the small container. The tongs work well to strengthen little hands which helps with fine motor control.

All of the items I used for this winter sensory box were found in my house. If you have some packing peanuts lying around those would work in place of the cotton balls and would be free. There really isn’t a right or wrong to this idea. Whatever you decide to use in a sensory box will undoubtedly provide your child with some frugal fun.

Last year I closed my blog Pocketful of Posies. All of the posts from Pocketful of Posies are now in the Activities for Kids category on this blog. Some of the pictures didn't transfer over, but I'm working on it.
