On Thursday I picked some broccoli and one zucchini. The broccoli plants have looked pretty sad so I was surprised to even get this much from our plants. I almost let it go too long because it was about to start flowering.
I fried up the zucchini for supper that night and I think we all wished I had been able to pick more than just one. They are getting ready to come on full force it looks like. I just picked three more a few minutes ago. Hopefully, there will be many more meals where zucchini makes an appearance.
As you can see from this picture our corn is starting to tassel even though it isn’t very tall. I am not sure what that will mean for our corn harvest. Our green beans are starting to bloom which means it won’t be long until we will be able to start picking our first beans. It looks like things are growing pretty well so far.
I have talked about how great it is to put down newspaper and straw, but I have never had the straw actually start growing before. It will hopefully die soon and thankfully can’t take root because the newspaper is preventing that from happening. I guess the straw must have been pretty fresh. Next year I will try to find old straw.
My potatoes, sweet potatoes and butternut squash are continuing to grow well. The potatoes even flowered recently. I am not really sure how long it will be until they are ready because I have never grown them before. The sweet potatoes won’t be ready until September, but I am not sure if that is when the regular potatoes will be done, too.
Have you harvested any produce from your garden yet?
