Today we started our study of the letter B by doing some bear themed activities. We read the book Corduroy by Don Freeman to get us started.
I remember reading this book as a little girl. Some time later we went to a store and I remember spending my own money to buy a teddy bear with an eye missing because I felt sorry for him like I did for Corduroy missing his button. 🙂
After reading the story we made a bear out of the letter B.
My son colored a capital letter B I had printed from Itty Bitty Bookworms. Then I cut it out and he glued it to a blue piece of paper. He added brown ears with pink centers, wiggly eyes, a pom pom nose, and a mouth drawn with a marker.
I think the bear is cute, but it could also easily be made into a beaver with the addition of some buck teeth. I got the idea for this activity from The Ramblings of a Crazy Woman.
For the next activity we completed I set out 5 large paper bears and some buttons. I asked my son to put the correct number of buttons on each bear’s belly. This activity is great for teaching one-to-one correspondence.
My son enjoyed the next activity we did which was helping baby bears find their mommas.
The bears were all cut from different types of fabric such as felt, burlap, fake fur, and fake sheepskin. There were 10 total cards, 5 babies and 5 mommas. Not only is this a matching activity but it is also a sensory experience (rough, soft, fluffy, etc.) and helps with visual discrimination.
We finished our bear activities by acting out the song, Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Turn around.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch the ground.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch your toes.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch your nose.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Arms out wide.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch your side.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Do a clap.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch your lap.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Hop on one.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Your turn is done.
