We planted our garden on April 24th and 25th. Here is the post I wrote about it. In that post I stated that I wouldn’t promise weekly updates. Well, here we are and it has been well over a month since that post, so I guess it is time for an update.
We had some crazy weather in May with lots of rain and even some very cold mornings thrown in. As a result I had to replant the green beans, some cucumbers and zucchini, and I lost most of my onions.
However, I think the garden is looking pretty good right now. I need to harvest the lettuce this week, so there will be lots of yummy salads to look forward to. I have some little zucchinis that are looking promising. I am hopeful we will have a bountiful harvest this summer despite our rocky start.
One thing I am really working on is controlling the weeds with more frequent hoeing. Usually the garden is just one big weed fest by August. I usually joke about being able to grow weeds really well, but I really can’t stand that they tend to take over as the growing season progresses. With food prices the way they are I really want to harvest and preserve as much as possible this year.
My mom said something a couple of days ago when she was looking at my garden. She said, “I love the way a June garden looks.” I have to agree with her. Now, an August garden is usually another story.
