It is amazing how much a garden can grow in just one week. It happens every year, but it is still so much fun to watch the progress of our garden.
You may recall that I told you last week that my mom and I were going to put weed control fabric everywhere in the garden. Well, after I found out how much she paid for one roll, I decided it was too expensive. So, I guess we will leave what we did and just do our best with the weeds everywhere else.
Since we haven’t had any rain I have had to water all of the plants a few times. This controlled watering has made it so the weeds aren’t growing in between the rows. Once we do get rain that is when the work of keeping up with the weeds will begin. Weed control is my biggest gardening challenge.
The zucchini hills are growing nicely. My kids are getting excited to harvest our first zucchini in the next month or so. Hopefully, they won’t all come on while we are on vacation.
My rows of corn are looking good. I think they will easily be “knee high by the 4th of July”.
I planted 3 tiny rows of lettuce this year and I think that will be a manageable amount. I will replant once we harvest all of it. I think this will be better than either having a whole bunch all at once or having the weeds take over.
I had to replace about 9 tomato and pepper plants due to birds snipping them off at the base. My other problem will be the pretty white “butterflies” (actually cabbage moths) like the one I just saw this morning on one of my broccoli plants.
Our white potatoes are really growing. I think a few aren’t going to come up, but most of them did.
I still need to replant about half of my green beans. I am not sure what happened, but we did get a whole bunch of rain the day after I planted them. For the most part the garden is looking pretty promising so far. How is your garden growing?
