April 2014 at Blessings Overflowing

When I wrote my last monthly update I mentioned how quickly March seemed to fly by. I had no idea April would seem to speed by even faster.

April brought nicer weather and more chances to enjoy being outside which was a blessing. Thanks to the warmer weather I am gearing up to plant our garden during the next few days.

Last week we had 30 tons of topsoil hauled so that we don’t end up with a flooded garden like last year. We lined two sides of the garden with cinder blocks and then used our tractor, the tiller, and rakes to level out the soil.

2014 Garden April

It has rained quite a bit this week and there has been no standing water in the garden so I think it is safe to say that the loads of dirt did the trick.

I am going to have to get more creative with my spacing this year because my back garden spot doesn’t exist anymore as there is a big barn on top of that spot.

Anyway, next week I plan to start my weekly garden update posts. I enjoy having a garden, even though I’m not very good at it, but maybe my posts of a weed-filled garden will encourage you to grow some produce for your own family. 😉

birthday girl

Early in April this little girl of mine turned 3. It seems like just a few months ago, instead of a few years, that I shared with you that I was pregnant and then the story of her birth.

Janna wanted a purple party and loved wearing her dress with “purple coconuts” on it (purple polka dots). She had a fun time at her party and sang as loud as anyone during “Happy Birthday”. :)

Last year I had a few sick kiddos and missed going to church on Easter for the first time. This year everyone was healthy and we got to enjoy a wonderful day of worship and family time.

My boys obliged me and wore somewhat matching clothes and even smiled for a few pictures.

I made the girls matching dresses and I think I may have conquered my fear of sewing clothes from real patterns.

Julia’s dress was made with a vintage 1960’s pattern we found at the Goodwill. I will have to share more about their dresses in another post.

Blessings Overflowing Family

It isn’t easy getting all 7 of us to smile and look at the camera. Janna felt like she had smiled quite enough for the camera by this point, but I love this picture anyway.

I didn’t take as many pictures and post them on Instagram as I have in previous months. This was mainly due to the fact that my iTouch dies within 10 minutes of taking it off the charger.

Regardless, here are the pictures I did post. You can follow me on Instagram if you want to keep up with me there.

April 2014 Instagram

I did write a few blog posts this month, but not many.

Lately, I have felt like I have so much to say, yet the words just aren’t coming out right. I hope to get over my writer’s block and get back to regular posting soon.

Your family is beautiful! I know what you mean about a weed filled garden. =) I start out with the best intentions, but by the time July rolls around, it is so hot…I procrastinate with the weeding part. Loved reading your post. I have five children and I know just how hard it is to get them to cooperate for a picture, much less matching outfits! The dresses are lovely! Blessings and Sunshine, Valerie

Thank you so much, Valerie! I am the same way about weeds. July and August usually are so hot and humid here. My goal this summer is to get out to the garden in the early morning hours when it is cooler. That’s the goal anyway. :) Thanks again and it is nice to “meet” someone who has a big family, too. Take care.

Nice to “meet” you too Jackie! I love finding friends who have as many kids as I do! It is rare these days. =) I hope to weed in the early mornings this summer too…we will see how well I do. =) Love your blog. Just a lovely place! Valerie

Thanks, Valerie. I enjoyed looking at your blog. I hope we can both conquer the weeds this year. :)

It is fun to get a peek into your life. You have a beautiful family. The last picture was so sweet. The fact that Janna is crying makes it even more cute….it shows real life :) The picture of your garden reminded me that I need to get going with my garden. Each year my garden seems to get less veggies and more flowers added to it. I love dahlias and each year I plant more. I always save room for beans an peas though, they are my favorite

Thank you so much, Katie! Yes, we are all about “real life” around here. :) I love flowers but I am so bad about not planting many. It’s mostly the fact that I grow weeds so well. 😉 This year we are adding marigolds around the outside perimeter of the garden so that should add some color. I need to see if I have some room for more flowers when I finish planting. I always plant green beans like you but I planted a few peas for the first time this year. Take care.

Saw this post only now and must say what a beautiful family you have ! Your kids light up these pictures with their sunshine smiles. The littlest one is increasingly looking like Julia as she grows up. Also love your dress in the family portrait.
I have often wondered what it is like to take care of a large family , because raising even one kid can be quite a handful at times. But when I see these beautiful images of your life, I can only imagine how much love and laughter surrounds each of these siblings and though it is a lot of hard work, it must be worth every bit of it. Keep rocking, super mom !

Thank you so much for your thoughtful and sweet comment, Susan. You made my day. :) Yes, it is a lot of work, but these kids of mine are worth it. Take care.
