11 Weeks to a More Organized Life & Home: Week 1 (15 Minutes of Bible Reading)

On Thursday I told you that I wanted to start a new series about getting my life and home in order before the new year.

When I was writing down a list of things I want to start making as habits in my life and home, I easily came up with more than eleven items.  The next task was to decide what should take top priority.  I started thinking about what should be first in my life and the choice became clear.

Read the Bible for 15 minutes each day.

Being a busy mom with young children, it can be easy to say that I don’t have time to commit to lengthy Bible reading/study time.

Yet, how can it be so easy to take the time to surf the internet, watch TV, sew or do other crafts, but not have enough time to read the Bible?

So, today I am making the commitment to read from the Bible for 15 minutes each day for the next 11 weeks.   By the start of the new year this should be a habit that will stick.

I have tried reading plans in the past and worked really hard on the Bible in 90 Days plan last year.  However, I didn’t finish because the readings were so lengthy and I got bogged down by the whole idea of having to read so much each day.  Perfectionism reared its ugly head when I wasn’t keeping up.  I felt like a failure and ended up stopping trying to finish.

With this new challenge for myself I have decided to not have a reading plan or any commitment laid out in advance other than to read from the Bible for 15 minutes.

Would you like to join me and read from your Bible for 15 minutes each day?  If you already do that and more each day, that is awesome!  However, if you are like me and slack off sometimes,  now is the time to make reading God’s word a priority.

My goal will be to post on Facebook when I have read for 15 minutes and share what passages I read.  I would love for you to post when you have read for 15 minutes.

I have created a simple printable checklist for this week.  There is a box to check when you have read your Bible for 15 minutes.  There is also some space where you can record what passages you read each day.  I think this will be helpful to me and I hope it will be helpful to you.  (Click on the picture below to print the checklist.)

Remember to check in with me on Facebook each day.

Since I read your Thursday’s post I have been thinking about the things that I really need to work on too. I may choose different ones to do at times simply because they are more what I am needing to work on but I am looking forward to be encouraged by seeing what you are working on too.

This goal is a great one. This is something that we have been working to do more of in our home as well. It has been a goal of this year and it is so fun to see that it has become a habit. I dont’ have a set time in minutes to read but I do have my alone time in the morning where I pray and read and then I read to the kids at the breakfast table and then again after lunch. We also work on memorizing scripture in the morning. It is truly a blessing to get more scripture into our life.

Thanks, Abbi!  You do a great job with your Bible study.  I am always praying, but not good at reading.  I have really enjoyed being more structured the past 3 days by setting a timer.  I have been highlighting verses as I go which is a help for encouragement and further study.  I am glad you are joining me on this 11 week adventure.  :)
